Vienna Danube Island Festival held as scheduled

Monday, June 29th, 2009

The 26th Danube Island Festival was ceremoniously opened on Friday night in the Danube Island as scheduled.

Over the past few days, due to the continuing rainfall, the Danube water rose to such an extent that some of facilities set up for the Danube Island Festival had been soaked by water. Until Wednesday, the organizers of the festival still worried that this year’s Danube Island Festival might be forced to cancel owing to flooding.

Fortunately, from Thursday on, the weather along the Danube valley in Austria began to be fair, and the Danube water level dropped. The flow decreased significantly to alleviate the flood threat. The organizers therefore decided to hold this year’s Danube Island Festival on Friday evening as scheduled.

People were organized to repair and clean up the soaked facilities on Danube islands. A total of 1,000 cubic meters of wood pieces were also shipped to be scattered on the island to prevent the road slippery, muddy, so as to ensure the festival opened as scheduled.

During the three-day festival this year, a total of 13 stages have been set up, and about 2,000 artists will give their music, concerts and other performances for the audiences.

However, for the purpose of environmental protection, security and other considerations, there will be still no fireworks in this year’s Danube Island Festival as last year.

Vienna Danube Island Festival began in 1983. In the past 25 years, the Danube Island Festival attracted more than 50 million audiences.

Kadhafi showered Condoleezza Rice with gifts

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Libya’s leader Colonel Moamer Kadhafi showered then US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice with gifts during her historic visit to Tripoli last year, according to a government report.

Kadhafi, who did not hide his admiration for the woman he called “Leeza” rather than her nickname “Condi,” gave her a diamond ring in a wood box, a locket with his photograph and a DVD with a musical instrument.

The value of the gifts amounted to 212,225 dollars, according to the 2008 annual report of gifts given to members of the US administration that was published in the Federal Register.

The first US chief diplomat to travel to Libya for 55 years, Rice received the gifts when she met Kadhafi on her visit to Tripoli on September 5.

The Federal Register did not specify what instrument she received, but the official Libyan news agency JANA previously reported that Kadhafi presented her with a lute.

Rice’s spokesman Sean McCormack also received a gift from Kadhafi: a Swiss watch bearing a portrait of the Libyan leader.

All the presents become public property as US law bars any representative of the US government from receiving a present from a foreign government.

Bullock’s ‘Proposal’ woos date crowds with $34.1M

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Movie audiences accepted a proposal from Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, who scored the summer’s first big romantic comedy hit.

Bullock and Reynolds’ “The Proposal” took in $34.1 million to open as the weekend’s No. 1 movie, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Disney flick delivered the biggest opening ever for Bullock, nearly double that of her previous best of $17.6 million for the 2007 paranormal thriller “Premonition.”

Bullock stars as a ruthless publishing executive who coerces her put-upon assistant (Reynolds) into a fake marriage so she can avoid deportation back to her native Canada.

“I think the market was ready for a really fun, broad romantic comedy,” said Mark Zoradi, president of Disney’s motion-picture group.

“The Proposal” took over the top spot from the Warner Bros. bachelor-party comedy “The Hangover,” which slipped to second place with $26.9 million. A surprise smash hit, “The Hangover” raised its total to $152.9 million.

Disney’s animated adventure “Up” was No. 3 with $21.3 million, lifting its total to $224.1 million and following Paramount’s “Star Trek” as the second movie of 2009 to cross the $200 million mark.

Debuting in the fourth spot with $20.2 million was Sony’s caveman comedy “Year One,” starring Jack Black and Michael Cera as Neanderthals on a road trip after they are banished from their village.

It was summer’s second big-name comedy set in prehistoric times to take a back seat to a wedding-themed romp. Will Ferrell’s “Land of the Lost” opened at No. 3 in early June, the same weekend “The Hangover” pulled off a No. 1 upset.

“June is officially comedy month at the theaters. Comedy is really ruling things,” said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.

Woody Allen’s latest comedy, “Whatever Works,” had a strong start in limited release, hauling in $280,720 in nine theaters for an average of $31,191 a cinema. That compares to an average of $11,163 in 3,056 theaters for “The Proposal” and $6,684 in 3,022 cinemas for “Year One.”

Released by Sony Pictures Classics, “Whatever Works” stars Larry David as a misanthropic New Yorker who forges unlikely relationships with a conservative Southern family (Evan Rachel Wood, Patricia Clarkson and Ed Begley Jr.).

While some of June’s comedies performed well, the month generally has been a downer for Hollywood, which tore through the first part of the year with a record box-office pace.

Revenues this weekend were up slightly compared to the same period a year ago, but that followed three straight weekends of declining box-office receipts.

For the year, revenue remains up a solid 10 percent, though summer ticket sales are dead even with last year’s, Dergarabedian said.

That should turn around this coming weekend with the debut of the blockbuster sequel “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” which industry analysts say could deliver the year’s first $100 million opening.

Paramount’s “Transformers” sequel got off to a big start in Great Britain and Japan, where it opened this weekend in advance of its U.S. debut Wednesday, pulling in $14.1 million in Britain and $5.8 million in Japan.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. “The Proposal,” $34.1 million.

2. “The Hangover,” $26.9 million.

3. “Up,” $21.3 million.

3. “Year One,” $20.2 million.

5. “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3,” $11.3 million.

6. “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” $7.3 million.

7. “Star Trek,” $4.7 million.

8. “Land of the Lost,” $4 million.

9. “Imagine That,” $3.1 million.

10. “Terminator Salvation,” $3.07 million.

U.S. accuses Sudan of supporting Chadian rebels

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

The United States condemns the cross-border attacks by Chadian rebels from neighboring Sudan, the State Department said in a statement on Thursday.

“The United States condemns the current attacks by Chadian rebels coming across the border from Sudan,” State Department spokesman Robert Wood said in a statement.

“We call on the rebels to desist from all offensive operations, renounce violence and enter into negotiations with the government of Chad to re-enter Chadian society,” he said.

“We also call on the government of Sudan to disarm and demobilize any Chadian rebels on its territory now or in the future and urge their return to Chad,” the spokesman said.

Chad said earlier in the day that its army had killed more than100 rebels in the two-day clash in the country’s eastern region south of Goz Beida.

Chad’s government blasted Sudan for backing the rebels. But Sudan denied the accusation.

Chad and Sudan severed diplomatic ties in April 2006 and May 2008 amid escalations of tensions, in which they accused each other of supporting rebels.

24 scammers lose appeal, back in jail

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Twenty-four people have lost a high court appeal over their involvement in one of the country’s largest pyramid schemes, in which more than 20,000 people were defrauded of 1.68 billion yuan ($246 million).

The criminal mastermind, Zhao Pengyun, 37, from Shenyang, Liaoning province was jailed for 15 years and fined more than 300 million yuan after the Beijing municipal high people’s court yesterday upheld a March ruling by the Beijing municipal No.2 intermediate people’s court.

He was found guilty of illegal management for organizing the scheme that promised victims high returns for investment in forestland.

Four of the 28 defendants had criminal sentences quashed or reduced after they handed over information about the syndicate’s activities or returned large amounts of illicit money, the high court announced.

Zhao’s 23 criminal associates received sentences between 1 and 15 years and fines between 200,000 and 70 million yuan.

The Yilin Wood Company, which Zhao established with a criminal associate in April 2004, collected about 1.68 billion yuan in revenue until it was reported to police in May 2005. Most of the cash was spent on luxury items like houses, cars, jewelry and antiques.

Authorities yesterday said they would trace any remaining assets in order to compensate victims, who come from 11 provinces and municipalities, including more than 16,000 people in Beijing.

In an advertisement for the scheme, victims were told that if they invested 55,500 yuan in a 1 ha forest plot they would receive 228,000 yuan within seven years. That this was in-line with the plot’s rising value and represented a 58.7 percent annual rate of return, the scammers said. Victims who bought a lot of forestland were promised sales representative positions and entry into the pyramid scheme.

If they then sold 2 ha of forestland, the sales representatives were promised a promotion to sales manager. Four levels were included in the scheme and the more senior the position, the more money the person stood to make. The company signed contracts to buy more than 64,400 ha of forest and sold more than 28,200 ha until May 2005.

The court was told that five high-level managers received more than 10 million yuan and 18 senior managers were paid more than 1 million yuan in commission. Huang Jinhui, training center senior manager, received more than 50 million yuan in commission over two years.

Meanwhile, the Beijing Lawyers Association said it would handle liquidation of the forestland ahead any of compensation payouts for victims. They have established registration offices in Beijing, Chongqing, Shenyang, Shanghai and Guangzhou to receive victims and verify documents including purchase contracts and receipts.

Qiu Baochang, dean of the Beijing-based Huijia law firm, said that in cases of illegal fundraising, the most important effort for authorities is to retrieve as much of the lost money as possible, and always punish the perpetrators severely.

“Cases involving pyramid schemes must be handled in a way that promotes social stability, as they often involve a large number of people and a lot of money,” Qiu told China Daily.

Samsung, Nokia heat up smartphone contest

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

The world’s two largest cellphone makers, Nokia and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, unveiled new phones on Monday, offering features comparable to iPhone and Pre, but at lower prices.

In the last two weeks Apple Inc’s launch of an updated version of iPhone and Palm Inc’s Pre model have heated up competition in the sweet-spot of an otherwise shrinking industry.

“What is clear is that we are heading to one of the most competitive fourth-quarters we have had,” said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.

The holiday fueled fourth quarter is usually the strongest sales season for handsets and vendors launch their top models in time to reach the sales peak in October-December quarter.

The cellphone market volume is expected to fall about 10 percent this year as recession dampens consumer demand, but the market for so-called smartphones is expected to rise 10 percent to 20 percent, boosted by new and attractive models from many of the top vendors.

“Consumer demand for more capable devices seems to be accelerating despite the general economic doom and gloom,” said Ben Wood, a research director at CCS Insight. “Samsung and Nokia are playing smart by offering these sorts of products at punchy price points.”

Samsung revamped in one go its smartphones portfolio, unveiling four new models to its Omnia range — the Omnia II, the OmniaLITE and two OmniaPRO models, all using Microsoft Corp’s Windows Mobile software.

Samsung also launched a new mass-market “Jet” model on Monday, which differs from some 150 phones Samsung launches per year with its full touch screen, a next-generation display and improved processor to deliver fast mobile Internet access.

The company said it will reach new, untapped markets of consumers who want smartphone functionality at a “reasonable price.” It did not reveal the price of the phone, but analysts said it was comparable to most mid-range models.

Top cellphone maker Nokia launched three new handsets on Monday, including a new touch-screen model, the 5530 Xpressmusic, which would sell for 199 euros ($280) before subsidies and taxes, starting next quarter.

“Nokia is trying to address the very competitive mid-range space given the prices of the Pre and the new iPhone,” said Gartner’s Milanesi.

“Nokia can also benefit from a lower contract tariff than these two devices have, which will make the products more competitive, but certainly not offering a comparable user experience.”

RAYS OF LIGHT

The cellphone industry saw its worst-ever quarter in January-to-March, with the market shrinking 14 percent from a year ago and Nokia reporting its first-ever quarterly pretax loss.

Several companies and analysts have said the worst could well be over for the industry because the fall was partly caused by retailers selling stockpiles of older phones, but only a few have seen any improvement in demand.

The head of sales and marketing at Samsung’s mobile unit said he was hopeful phone sales would fall 8 percent to 9 percent this year across the industry, slightly less than the company’s official expectation of a 10 percent drop, as the global economy begins to recover.

“In the second half … I do not see any special surge in demand. However, there is a small sign of recovery of the general economy. Hopefully, the mobile industry also will recover some,” Lee Donjoo told Reuters in an interview.

“Currently, we’re focusing on around 10 percent lower. I’m expecting a little less, eventually — minus 9, minus 8, hopefully.”

West side story

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Old-fashioned song and- dance routines set to Leonard Bernstein’s music apart, there’s something thoroughly modern about the whole affair.

There’s a turf war going on, a battle between the all- American Jets, led by Riff (Russ Tamblyn), and the Sharks, a local band of Puerto Ricans (played largely by made-up white boys).

The core of the story is a loose update of the classic ‘Romeo and Juliet’ tangle, with Jet Tony (Richard Beymer) and Shark chick Maria (a stunning Natalie Wood) falling head over heels and sparking fireworks between their respective camps.

Largely it’s simple, rousing stuff, but the debate among the Puerto Ricans about the attraction and repulsion of the American dream, as caught in the song ‘America’, remains current. DC

US/China scheme wins international energy award

Friday, June 12th, 2009

A United States/China scheme that produces portable, cheap and efficient fuel-wood stoves for global distribution has won an international energy award in Britain.

The project between Aprovecho Research Center (ARC) based in Oregon and Shengzhou Stove Manufacturer (SSM) in China was presented the Energy Champion award by the Prince of Wales at the 2009 Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy on Thursday evening.

Under the US/China scheme, 60,000 stoves have been sold since 2008, with production capacity now at 50,000 per month.

International Development Enterprises India (IDEI) won the 2009 Ashden Outstanding Achievement Award for a simple treadle pump that has lifted more than 750,000 farmers out of poverty. Since winning an Ashden Award in 2006 the organization has diversified into drip irrigation systems and its products are selling worldwide. The organization uses Bollywood films and stars to get its message across.

Organizations from Ethiopia, Nicaragua and Uganda were among six other winners of awards for electrification of rural areas, energy enterprises, renewables for economic development, nutrition improvement, and avoiding deforestation, while eight awards were given to British schemes.

“The major value of these awards is that they demonstrate what is possible, not only for small scale-scale projects, but what is achievable for the whole world. So much of what we need to build cleaner and more efficient communities is already with us,” the Prince of Wales said.

Gareth Thomas, International Development Minister, noted that projects like these “bring real benefits to local communities and clearly demonstrate how clean, renewable energy can help grow local economies, improve people’s health and reduce poverty — as well as contributing toward the fight against climate change.”

Sarah Butler-Sloss, founder and chair of the Ashden Awards said: “We are delighted that we can bring such great examples of innovation and inspiration to the attention of policy makers and the public to help push forward the agenda on practical measures to combat climate change.”

Founded in 2001, the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy aims to encourage the greater use of local sustainable energy to address climate change and alleviate poverty. This year, 200,000 pounds (one pound equals to about 1.6 U.S. dollars) were awarded in prizes to seven international schemes that are saving thousands of tons in carbon emissions and benefiting communities around the globe.

China, Kenya jointly develop solar products for Africa

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

A joint research project between China and Kenya will help utilize solar energy in Africa, scientists said Wednesday.

An Xingcai, deputy head of the Natural Energy Resource Research Institute based in Gansu Province, northwest China, said researchers would study how to adapt Chinese solar panels and heaters to the Kenyan climate.

The demonstration project will run until 2012. The Kenyan partner is an electronic technology company.

China’s Ministry of Science and Technology approved the project in April and allocated 2.64 million yuan (386,000 U.S. dollars) for the work.

The institute would dispatch researchers to Kenya and set up an office there, according to An, also deputy director of the International Center for Promotion and Transfer of Solar Energy Technology under the United Nations Industry Development Organization.

Kenya has rich solar resources, but its electricity comes mainly from hydropower and imported oil. Its rural population relies heavily on wood and charcoal for heating and cooking.

The Natural Energy Research Institute was founded in 1978. Between 1991 and 2008, the institute trained more than 500 people in practical solar technology for Africa, including 12 for Kenya.

China is the world’s largest producer of solar heaters and the third largest maker of photovoltaic cells, National Development and Reform Commission statistics show.
